Before / After
Walk through how a correction becomes a durable preference.
Each scenario walks through one skill and one or more corrections, in three steps:
- Here’s what it produced — the output generated with an empty Whetstone store. The subjective preferences we later teach are (typically) not honored.
- Here’s what wasn’t good — the scripted correction(s), quoted verbatim as the user would actually say them, plus the run each one started sticking on.
- Here’s what changed — the same task, generated again once the learned layer was applied. Most preferences are honored; when one genuinely isn’t (a miss in retrieval, or a correction that hasn’t stuck within the run budget yet), that’s shown too, not hidden. The raw learned layer Whetstone injected is one click away if you want the receipts.
The scenarios span five skills — Great Tables, frontend design, plotnine, ggplot2, and PowerPoint decks — each carrying one or more arbitrary house-style preferences (most scenarios teach one or two; plotnine_gtcars_hp_msrp and ggplot2_gtcars_hp_price each teach five). The substrate is the same for all five — Whetstone doesn’t care that ggplot2 is R and the rest are Python; only the skill and the taught preferences change.
The panels render each skill’s output natively from the committed artifacts under harness/out/: Great Tables tables inline, self-contained web pages sandboxed in an iframe, plotnine and ggplot2 plots as rendered images, and — for binary formats like pptx — the generated build script (the .pptx itself is committed alongside it).
Great Tables
Native HTML tables — real tables, not screenshots.

- [L1] (data organization, weight 0.67) Don't list one row per car model. Roll the data up to one row per manufacturer (`mfr`), showing the mean horsepower (`hp`) and mean price (`msrp`) across that manufacturer's whole lineup — compute this with a real groupby aggregation over the raw rows, not a per-model listing.
- [L2] (row count column, weight 0.67) Add a "Models" column showing how many models from that manufacturer went into each average - the reader should be able to tell a 2-model average from a 12-model one.gtcars_top10_by_country

The user corrects it, in their own words:
“Use accounting format for negatives (parentheses, not a minus).”
This stuck starting at run 2 — honored from then on.
“Use the YlOrRd (amber-to-red) palette for the percent-change heatmap, not green.”
This stuck starting at run 2 — honored from then on.

You have a LEARNED LAYER of this user's preferences for this skill, captured from earlier runs. Apply ALL of it. Learnings are weighted tastes (higher weight = more established); issues are mandatory rules.
Learnings (preferences):
- [L2] (color encoding, weight 0.67) Heat-map the percent-change column with a warm amber-to-red ramp — use the ColorBrewer `YlOrRd` palette via data_color(columns=..., palette="YlOrRd"). Not a green or red-green scale.
- [L1] (number formatting, weight 0.67) Show negative numbers in accounting style — wrapped in parentheses, not with a minus sign.towny_growth_trends

The user corrects it, in their own words:
“The percent-change columns should show a + on gains.”
The cold run already happened to satisfy this by chance, but this stuck starting at run 2 — honored from then on.
“House rule: growth is magenta (use the PuRd palette), never green.”
This stuck starting at run 2 — honored from then on.

“Stop doing three separate cards - I want a single comparison table, features as rows and tiers as columns, so I can compare across a row instead of hunting through three boxes.”
This stuck starting at run 2 — honored from then on.
“Reorder the columns - Solo, then Enterprise, then Team last, not Team stuck in the middle.”
This hadn't stuck yet within the run budget shown here.
The same task, generated again once the learned layer is applied.

The learned layer injected into the warm run's prompt, verbatim:
You have a LEARNED LAYER of this user's preferences for this skill, captured from earlier runs. Apply ALL of it. Learnings are weighted tastes (higher weight = more established); issues are mandatory rules.
Learnings (preferences):
- [L1] (layout structure, weight 0.80) Don't lay the tiers out as three side-by-side cards. Restructure this as a single comparison table instead: one row per feature, one column per tier, so a reader can scan across a row and compare the tiers directly at a glance.plotnine
Grammar-of-graphics plots, rendered as images.
plotnine_gtcars_hp_faceted
The skill runs against an empty Whetstone store — nothing has been taught yet.
The user corrects it, in their own words:
“Don't cram every country onto one plot with colors - facet it, one small panel per country so each country's shape is easy to read on its own.”
This stuck starting at run 2 — honored from then on.
“Give each facet its own y-axis scale - don't force them to share one range, some countries' prices barely move compared to others.”
This stuck starting at run 2 — honored from then on.
The same task, generated again once the learned layer is applied.

You have a LEARNED LAYER of this user's preferences for this skill, captured from earlier runs. Apply ALL of it. Learnings are weighted tastes (higher weight = more established); issues are mandatory rules.
Learnings (preferences):
- [L2] (aspect ratio, weight 0.67) Use a SQUARE 1:1 slide format: set `prs.slide_width = Inches(10)` AND `prs.slide_height = Inches(10)` on the Presentation (import Inches from `pptx.util`).
- [L1] (typography, weight 0.67) Set every text run's font to Consolas (`run.font.name = "Consolas"`) — titles and body, on all slides.pitch_deck_reorder
The skill runs against an empty Whetstone store — nothing has been taught yet.

- [L1] (slide order, weight 0.67) Don't save the call-to-action for last. Move the "Install Marrow" call-to-action slide to be the SECOND slide - right after the title, before the problem/idea/how-it-works slides. Lead with the install command, then explain why it matters.
- [L2] (slide structure, weight 0.67) Insert a new slide titled "Why now" between "The idea" and "How it works", making the case that test suites have grown large enough that manual coverage tracking has become untenable - this is new content the outline doesn't ask for, added because it strengthens the pitch.
